The effect of mental health–promoting interventions on the firefighters’ overall health, behavioral well‑being, and job performance: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background and aims: Firefighters must perform under substantial physical, cognitive, and psychological stressors in frequently changing, high-pressure environments. This systematic review evaluates the effects of mental health–promoting interventions on firefighters’ overall health, behavioral well‑being, and job performance.
Methods: We searched PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science for primary studies. Results were pooled using standardized mean differences, weighted mean differences, and 95% confidence intervals under fixed- or random-effects models as appropriate.
Results: After screening, nine studies with a total of 1,460 participants met inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed that mental health promotion training produced significant improvements in health and behavioral outcomes and in occupational performance (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: Mental health–promoting interventions significantly improve firefighters’ overall health, behavioral well‑being, and job performance. These findings underscore the value of mental health programs for enhancing job performance and quality of life in this population.
