Helicobacter pylori is a gram negative, motile, nonspore-producing
rod that is inactive in many biochemical tests. The bacteria cannot
fermentate or oxidate glucose but produce different enzymes like
urease and catalase. This bacterium has been studied since 1893
by many scientists including Bizzozero.
H.pylori is now recognized to be strongly related to peptic ulcer
disease. Various virulence factors such as helical shape, adhesion
factors, and urease enzyme are identified. Diagnosis is made by
different methods like culture, histopathology, urease test and
serology. Treatment includes variou single and multi drug regimens.
The role of probiotics in prevention and treatment has recently gain
attention. |
